Top 5 Seattle Seahawks Blogs

by Joe on September 19, 2011

Like most Seahawks fans I spend a lot of time reading about the Seahawks. I check the major sports sites like and I read national colums from guys like Mike Sando, Chris Mortensen, Adam Schefter, Mike Florio, and so on. But what I really like reading is many of the different blogs out there dedicated specifically to the Seattle Seahawks. So I figured it is time to recognize some of the best of the best.

So what makes a blog the “best of the best”? Here are a couple factors I look at:

1. Good information. I realize most of these bloggers aren’t connected and don’t have the inside information the national sports writers have so I don’t need breaking injury reports, free agent rumors, and that kind of stuff. I just want some good information.

2. Not too negative. It is way too easy to just rant about negative stuff on a blog and it is much harder to try to put a positive spin on things. I don’t want to read blogs where they just focus on the negative. We all know the negatives. I want some hope. I want something to look forward to. I want to read good things about the Seahawks. There is enough negativity directed towards the Seahawks in the national media. I don’t need that from a blog.

3.  Not overly optimistic. I already see the Seahawks too optimistically. Sometimes I do need a dose of reality to see that maybe the Seahawks aren’t as good as I might think they are. I need to hear that my favorite player might not be as good as I think he is.

4. Updated frequently. If someone only posts once every 4 months that is pretty worthless. I want content updated regularly. I need some way to spend my time at work and if nobody is posting I will have nothing to read.

That is most of what I want to see in a good Seahawks blog. The writing style doesn’t need to be too polished, I don’t need to see a good looking blog, and I don’t really care how many readers and followers you have. As long as the blog has good information I want to read it.

I have my list of Seahawks blogs I really like. But I need your help to choose my Top 5 Seahawks Blogs. I have listed a few below and have probably missed some. Please take a couple seconds to vote for the ones you like. If you have one you like that isn’t listed here just leave a comment and let me know where to find it and I will add it in.

Update: The voting will close Thursday, Sept 27th at around 6 PM. Get your votes in before then. I will tabulate the votes, combine them with my thoughts, and announce the winners on Friday, Sept 28th.

Once the voting is done (probably in a couple weeks) I will tally all the votes, compare those to my personal top 5 (don’t want to influence the voting by letting you know what those are yet) and announce the winners.

And while you are here be sure to visit our Seahawks Fan Shop to get a great Seahawks shirt, jersey, hat, sweatshirt, and more.

I will list the top 5 and have a special badge they can post on their site but also I will have some prizes for the top 3.

1st Prize: A New Seahawks Jersey! Yep, that is right. I will give the best blogger a new Seahawks replica jersey. They can choose any replica jersey from

2nd Prize: A New Seahawks Hat. Fitted, snapback, visor, beanie… whatever they want. See all the available Seahawks hats.

3rd Prize: A cool Seahawks Drawstring Backpack. Or anything else about that price.

So get out there and vote. And if you are one of these bloggers feel free to tweet, post on Facebook, bribe me with Seahawks gear, write blog posts praising me, and whatever else you want to do to win.

Remember to leave a comment if there is a Seahawks blog I am missing. And you can also leave a comment and let me know why you like any of these blogs.

No love for the the matchups zone?? Lol

Joe September 19, 2011 at 11:08 pm

I knew there was one I was forgetting. I will add it right now. Thanks for reminding me!

Paul September 20, 2011 at 2:57 am

No love for the Seahawks/Mariners blog?

JHS September 20, 2011 at 1:16 pm

DKSB, hands down.

I check his site every day!

Faux September 20, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Field Gulls is great for news, gets lots of negative points for smarmy posters and moderators.

bohawk September 20, 2011 at 11:36 pm

I agree with Faux. Field Gulls is the most mean-spirited sports blog community I’ve ever interacted with. Just because you understand what DVOA is doesn’t make your opinion any more valid than mine.

Mr Fish September 21, 2011 at 1:14 am

Any particular reason the Seahawks blogs at the local newspaper sites weren’t included?

The Seattle Times and Tacoma News-Tribune both have active and seemingly popular blogs devoted to the Seahawks. The Post-Intelligencer has one too, but doesn’t seem to have attracted as many commenters.

Joe September 21, 2011 at 3:10 am

I didn’t include the newspaper sites because I didn’t necessarily want journalists that had inside access, press passes, and the like. I was more wanting blogs by fans.

I do like a lot of the columnists and news blogs but for the sake of this poll I left them out.

Mr Fish September 21, 2011 at 1:20 am

I agree with faux and bohawk, and would like to see Field Gulls taken down a peg. They’ve definitely become too full of themselves. I still read the articles, but the comment threads turn my stomach.

Joe September 21, 2011 at 3:12 am

For the most part I don’t read too many of the comment threads. Not really because they are bad (I have seen much worse in many forums and communities over the years) but more because they can just get so long.

Brandon Adams September 21, 2011 at 11:27 pm

I personally feel that Fieldgulls has become much, much better this year.

bohawk September 22, 2011 at 5:52 pm

12thmanrising has gone up like a 100 votes in a day. I’ve never even heard of that blog. Seems a little fishy.

Joe September 22, 2011 at 5:58 pm

I am watching for stuff like that. They did put up a blog post a couple days ago: so that might have something to do with the jump.

And I am not gonna rely strictly on this poll to pick the winner. I will be combining the results of this poll with my own thoughts.

But overall is a good quality Seahawks blog and they definitely deserve to be in this poll.

Me & Shawn use to work on a weekly Seahawks radio show together, we use to have Seahawks players give away freebies and stuff, those were the days promoting the Seahawks Bobby Engram and the likes! Shawn Dolence was a very smart young man and knew his Seahawks well!

Seahawkfanatic September 23, 2011 at 4:23 am

Wow, we sure got a bad start, but the 12th Man Army Kicks A$$

Danny Kelly September 23, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Joe, this is a fun contest, nice work putting this together!! Sorry to everyone that thinks the commentary sections at FG are dickish! Really, it’s tough to regulate that kind of thing without on the internet (I try to ignore most of the negativity, when it happens). I’ve tried to create a place that’s open and fun for everyone, but looks like I need to try harder. Good feedback, thanks!

Joe September 23, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Thanks for the kind words Danny. I am pretty overwhelmed with the response so far. There have been 650+ voters and over 1000 votes.

Whenever you open up anything on the internet for people to comment or share it will rarely be great. There will always be tools out there who ruin it for everyone. So I don’t focus on stuff like that too much. It is a tough balance between having an open discussion and clamping it down to get rid of the bad stuff.

Just keep doing what you are doing. It is awesome that there are so many great Seahawks blogs out there and so many great Seahawks fans.

bohawk September 23, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Danny, you certainly are not the problem. At least, I’ve never seen an unkind word from you. I wish I could say the same for some of your co-writers. This whole idea that some fans are better than others is just a pet-peeve of mine. Being patronizing doesn’t make people right. FWIW, it was just as bad or worse with Morgan running the site. He seemed to cultivate those arrogant stat-geek types. I think you added a new guy recently (davidhu?) who seems to do numbers and analysis without being a prick about it. Keep up the good leadership, and hopefully the site will follow.

QBOTF September 25, 2011 at 5:17 am

Very cool poll! Thanks for running it. Lots of blogs I’ve never heard of. That 12thManRising rank is surprising. He has more votes than he does followers on Twitter!!/12th_Man_Rising

Passionate readers, I guess!

Tora September 28, 2011 at 8:21 pm

actually, that’s the wrong twitter handle. That one hasn’t been used in a really long time. Keith tweets regularly as @12thMan_Rising. They really need to get that fixed on there website.

bohawk September 30, 2011 at 5:13 pm

So he has 97 followers on that one. The chances that he has more votes than blogs with multiple thousands of followers is a major stretch. Nothing against him, but it’s a shame some other more deserving blog got pushed down the list due to the over-voting that went on for that one blog.

Joe September 30, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Don’t worry. The fan voting is only one part of my selection process. Just because he is top 5 in votes doesn’t mean that is where he will stay. And just because someone isn’t in the top 5 in votes doesn’t mean he won’t be a winner. I should have the results up and ready to go some time this afternoon.

bohawk September 30, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Really glad to hear that, Joe! Thanks for running this poll. Been very enlightening. I learned about a lot of blogs I had never read before, including yours!

Riley Moore September 25, 2011 at 4:45 pm

I am just as surprised as anyone to see 12thman so high. I tried running the site for a while, and was not able to keep the posts consistent (everyday). Since then, Kieth Meyers has taken over and been posting regular. He’s spent a lot of time and energy building this site back up to what it once was when A Auger and S Dolence ran it.
You got to admire Danny Kelly’s response. Even though I write for 12thman, I still read the other blogs, and he does a great job. I don’t think it’s fair to hold the host responsible for the comments. And besides, Seattle is pretty tame when it comes to stuff like this compared to other cities like Philly or NY.
Thanks for posting this survey. If anything else it’s a great list of blogs for our favorite team. Go Hawks!

Danny Kelly September 26, 2011 at 9:51 pm

Thanks Riley – also thx to Joe and bohawk for the encouragement. And I’ll just echo that it’s great having so many good Seahawks blogs out there, and the quality seems to really have gone up as a whole in the last year or so. I lurked at all the blogs for a long long time before doing Field Gulls and I can’t even keep up anymore, there’s so much good stuff to read. It’s always a good problem to have.

bohawk September 26, 2011 at 2:32 am

No offense, Riley, but something just isn’t right with the 12thmanrising score. I’ve been watching this out of curiosity since day 1, and every other site has slowed down, while 12thmanrising has added a boatload of votes. I think someone is rigging it. It doesn’t really matter, I guess. Kind of a silly thing to fix.

SeahawkFanatic September 28, 2011 at 5:19 pm

Yeah great contest from Seahawks 12th Man Army! Wish we had known earlier and everyone would not have had a 2 week jump on us in voting? We are very happy with what we have!

Seahawkfanatic September 30, 2011 at 1:31 am

So why was the 12th Man Army removed from the voting???

Joe September 30, 2011 at 1:39 am

12th Man Army was removed because it is just curated content from other news sources, not original writing. It is a good source of Seahawks info but for this poll I wanted to keep it more on the original content side of things.
