5 Seahawks In The Pro Bowl

by Joe on January 28, 2012

I can’t really remember ever sitting down and watching a whole Pro-Bowl game but this year might be the one. Five Seahawks are heading to the Pro Bowl this year and I can’t wait to see them out on the field performing with some of the best players in the game.

Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, and Brandon Browner will all be there and I would guess they will all be on the field at the same time for at least some of the game. That is 3 out of 4 starters in the secondary for the Seahawks and Richard Sherman was playing at a Pro Bowl level the last half of the season. This should be the best secondary in the game next year. All 4 guys can cover, all 4 guys can hit, all 4 guys can play the run, and all 4 guys can make plays in the backfield.

And in the backfield we will see Michael Robinson and Marshawn Lynch. You know nobody in the Pro Bowl will really want to try and tackle Lynch so I am expecting to see Beast Mode in full effect. Let’s see Michael Robinson lead through the hole and plant James Harrison into the Hawaii sunset while Lynch abuses Polamalu, Ryan Clark, and anyone else who tries to tackle him. The Skittles should be flying in Hawaii on Sunday.

Also Darren Rovell has been tweeting out some of the gear players will be wearing tomorrow. He sent a link to a gallery of the Nike Pro Bowl Vapor Jet Gloves many of the players will have on and I gotta say they are pretty awesome. Here are the Seahawks gloves:

Nike Vapor Jet Pro Bowl Gloves

Love the gloves Nike made for the Seahawks in the Pro Bowl

Nike will be taking over all the jerseys, uniforms, and sideline apparel from Reebok come April and while I don’t expect them to go all Oregon Ducks on us I do think there will be quite a few teams that will get some pretty awesome uniform upgrades. Nike has stated that this year they don’t expect any major changes for any team and they mostly want to get more advanced fabrics into the uniforms but I do think a few teams will see some tweaks this year.

I really do like the Seahawks uniforms as they currently are but seeing that they are the closest team to Nike headquarters I kind of expect to see them as the poster child for what Nike can do. If the league allows I can see the Seahawks having some of the best uniforms in the game.

I am not gonna lie. I LOVE mock drafts. These next few months are great because there will be hundreds of different mock drafts to look at, analyze, second guess, dream about, curse silently (and vocally), and over analyze.

Melvin Ingram Seahawks

Will Ingram be in Seattle next year?

Mel Kiper Jr. came out with his first mock draft this morning and while he isn’t usually the most accurate when it comes to the Seahawks (Rob Rang seems to be the man for that) I love looking at his mock drafts.

Based on a coin toss with Kansas City the Seahawks will be picking 11 or 12 and in this draft Kiper has us at #12 picking Melvin Ingram, a defensive end from South Carolina. He is 6-2, 276 so he has prettty decent size to be an outside pass rusher but also stay in and stop the run.

Looking at his college stats can get after the QB but also make plays all over the field.

This is one of those players I really haven’t watched much in college and he doesn’t have a ton of buzz like some of the skill position players but this is the type of player who can perform at a high level for many years. Watching some highlight videos he kind of reminds me of a less athletic Julius Peppers. This highlight clip below shows some of his versatility:

After watching that clip I was pretty impressed with Melvin Ingram’s overall skill on the football field. He isn’t just a pass rusher. He isn’t just a run stopper. He kind of seems to me more like a 270 pound safety with his versatility. As a matter of fact, screw the 4-3 defense. Lets go to a 3-3-5 and line him up all over the field with Thomas and Chancellor!

Anyway, this isn’t a pick that will cause you to jump around the living room with joy or throw a bowl of chips at your TV but based on the players available on Kiper’s Mock Draft I think this would really help the Seahawks next year.

Of course a ton will change from now until April and players will jump all over the draft boards. How often do teams actually take players slotted for them in these early mock drafts? I have no idea. But for now I am looking forward to see if this one comes true.

Seahawks 17, Niners 19 – The Aftermath

by Joe on December 26, 2011

Sorry I am a day late getting this out to you. Been kinda busy around here. More on that in a bit.

Anyway, it was a pretty decent game against the San Francisco 49ers. Seattle took a quick lead with a TD on their opening drive, held that lead throughout the first half, lost the lead in the third, retook it in the 4th, and lost it again.

All in all the Seahawks did decent. Obviously not good enough to win but decent. Here are a few of the highlights for me:

1. Marshawn Lynch – San Francisco had not allowed a 100 yard rusher or a rushing TD all year. Marshawn Lynch made somewhat easy work of those. He had the bulk of his yards in the first half and finished with 107 yards on 21 carries and one TD. That is a performance I will take any game of the year. Of course 28 rushes for 150 would be better but 100 yards is a good day no matter who you are playing.

I don’t know if Seattle will resign Lynch in the offseason or even if they should sign him. He has done great for the Seahawks this year and has really ignited some excitement for the fans. Lynch has given this team somewhat of an identity and that is very important. But it is always scary giving running backs any sort of decent money. I could see the wisdom both ways on this one.

2. Blocked punt – Without going back and looking through all the stats I think this is the 6th blocked kick for the Seahawks this year (2 punts, 3 FGs, and an XP if I am not mistaken). Blocked kicks are huge game changers and Seattle was able to turn this blocked punt into a TD. Great job by the special teams on this play.

3. Ricardo Lockette – 1 catch  for 44 yards might not seem like much but this was Lockette’s first NFL catch and it really got Seattle off to a great start and helped on their opening TD drive. It was a pretty great catch and hopefully we can see more of this from Lockette in the future.

4. Kam Chancellor with 10 more tackles – This has been a HUGE year for Chancellor. 89 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 12 passes defended, and 4 interceptions. That is an awesome stat line for a safety. Kam is quickly becoming one of my favorite Seahawks and I will be sure to get a Kam Chancellor jersey next season as soon as they are available, hopefully in April when Nike takes over the jersey contract.

This secondary will be scary next year. Chancellor and Thomas are probably the best safety tandem in the game and Sherman and Browner are freakish with their size and speed. And don’t forget about Walter Thurmond who is injured and Roy Lewis who has done pretty decent when he has played. They can go 6 deep without any glaring weaknesses.

5. My son’s first Seahawks game – Yeah, this is why I have been busy:

First Seahawks Game

My boy Clyde's first Seahawks game!

Yeah, that’s right. My wife and I had our first child on Thursday. He is a beautiful baby boy and even though he slept through most of the game I know he really enjoyed it. I have been waiting a long time to watch a game with my boy and even though Seattle lost it was probably my favorite Seahawks game ever because I got to watch it holding my baby.

And don’t worry, he has plenty of Seahawks gear. Most of it is a bit big right now but he will fit it very soon.

OK, enough mushy stuff.

Seattle has one more game left against the Arizona Cardinals. A win would put them at 8-8 which would be huge for this team. Most “experts” had Seattle at around 4 wins. Some even had them as the front runners for the first pick in the draft. Personally I was a bit overly optimistic and had them at 10 wins but I am very pleased with an 8-8 record.

This is a very young team that lost some good players to injury but they kept growing and getting better as the season progressed. I would have been happy with a 4-12 record as long as I saw the team getting better and saw them building for the future. But the Seahawks have surprised nearly everyone this year and I love the attitude this team is playing with.

Pete Carroll and John Schneider are building a winner here. Not a short term, one year flash in the pan but a long term winning organization. We could see this team rattle off 5 or 6 straight playoff appearances over the next few years and challenge for the Super Bowl a few times.

The future is very bright for this team (the present hasn’t been bad either) and best of all they now have a new fan rooting for them.
